4 Simple Steps to Finding an SEO-Friendly Domain Name

December 30th, 2008 · 5 Comments · Journal

1. Go to Domains Bot and type in one of the words that you think fits your site (or your idea for the site), then scroll through the list of available domain names that pop up. You’ll be surprised by the number of quality .com domains that are still open.

2. Go to the Google Keyword Tool and enter the keywords that you think might fit your site — this tool will give you an approximate idea of how popular the keyword is.

3. Brainstorm over the keywords and domains that you’ve found. Ask yourself questions like, “What do people really want when they search for this keyword?” Try to tailor your site appropriately. The internet is still very much in its infancy — and there’s a lot of money to be made by entrepreneurs that can anticipate what somebody wants when they search on a certain keyword, and then give it to them.

4. Rinse and repeat.

If I’m missing something, let me know!

and remember!… if you have found the domain name you think you want and it is available, don’t wait, register it now (or there’s a chance someone else will take it). They usually cost less than $10 anyways, so even if you don’t end up using it, better safe than sorry.

I’ve had a few clients that had found the URL they wanted was available but they didn’t register it at the time… two weeks later someone else had it.

I can say that I have used this strategy many times when creating niche sites. Unfortunately when I first started blogging I was unaware of this so I just picked a name that I thought up that sounded cool at the time. I wish I could change it but its too far linked now.

    Nice Post.

Thanks for reminding me about DomainsBot. Try also http://domaintools.com.

And when you are ready to purchase, use coupon codes. Typically a company like Godaddy will have codes for $7.99 domain names. Just search for them on Google. It’s only a couple of bucks savings but they add up over time.

SDWD thanks for the added tips. Those coupon codes will add up over time! We’re entrepreneurs so we don’t like spending money anyway. Good advice.
